About Us
When you step in the front door of Stitch and Chatter you will get that old-fashioned quilting bee feel. When you step in the front door the first thing you should notice is the original wood floors which were refinished with the help of Idona's sister, Peggy; her niece, Sherry, and local contractor Layn Balthazor. The community has been adding their touch to the classroom by painting small barn quilt blocks to line the walls. The store is certainly unique and beautiful in many ways.
Stitch and Chatter opened on April 1st, 2010. The short history of Stitch and Chatter started its roots with reference to great family memories. Dennis’ mother and grandmother belonged to a ladies club in Speed, KS named Stitch and Chatter. Dennis & Idona knew it would be the perfect namesake for this new family venture.
When Stitch and Chatter first opened, Dennis was still running the farm and Idona worked full time as a rural mail carrier. Together, with the help of 4 part-time employees, the shop was open 6 days a week.
Anyone that knows the Duncan’s will tell you that Idona has a passion for all things fabric and sewing and Dennis loved tinkering with old sewing machines and spent a good portion of his time at the shop working on fixing machines that had broken down.
Stitch and Chatter began with just a few sewing notions and about 200 bolts of cotton fabrics, but quickly grew and found themselves bursting at the seams in their little shop on Main Street.
In the Spring of 2015, Dennis and Idona became the proud owners of a new building to house their ever-expanding sewing and quilt shop! What they believed would be a small building remodel of the new location, became a much larger project that turned into an even larger blessing. With the help of Dennis and Idona’s boys, Duane and Dave, and local contract Layn Balthazor, the new Stitch and Chatter location got a number of updates and a great new look!
In 2017, Dennis passed away leaving Idona with an amazing group of friends, shoppers, and fellow quilters that help carry on the Stitch & Chatter name, love, and creativity.
In 2018, Idona decided to deliver her last piece of mail on her rural route and retired so that she could, of course, spend all of her time working at the shop!
Currently, Stitch and Chatter offer a variety of sewing notions and quilting fabric and supplies. We offer sewing classes for young and old alike, provide a free sew night, and have many events that are open to the public. On Mondays from 3-5, we host the Happy Stitchers group which is compiled of many hand stitching enthusiasts. They would love to have you join them! We offer machine quilting and mending services.
Aside from the products, services, and classes, Stitch and Chatter offer a unique place for any quilter to gather and share ideas and projects. Everyone is welcome at Stitch and Chatter and will always be greeted with genuine friendship and a smile!
